What is respite care?

If you are caring for a parent or spouse, respite care is care for you. A trained caregiver steps in so you can rest, keep your own appointments, travel, or simply have an afternoon that belongs to you, knowing your loved one is safe and genuinely cared for.

Needing a break does not mean you do not care. Caregiver burnout is real, it builds quietly, and it makes you less able to give the care you want to give. The families who last are the ones who take breaks before they break.

When do families use respite care?

What will the caregiver do while I'm away?

Everything you normally do, shaped by a care plan we build together beforehand:

  • Personal care: bathing, dressing, grooming, and toileting
  • Meals: planning, cooking, and good company at the table
  • Medication reminders, so nothing is missed while you are gone (reminders only; we do not administer medications)
  • Companionship: conversation, activities, and outings
  • Light housekeeping, so you do not come home to a mess
  • Transportation and errands to appointments and around town
  • Patient, experienced support if your loved one lives with dementia or Alzheimer’s

  1. Call us or fill out our contact form

Tell us what you need covered and when.

  2. Free in-home assessment

We visit while you are there, learn the routine you have built, and write it down so nothing is lost in handoff. You can meet the caregiver before care begins.

  3. Take your break

Your caregiver follows the routine, and the office team stays reachable the whole time. Come back early or stay away longer: just call, and we will adjust.

Why do families trust Generations Home Care with respite?

We are locally owned in every city we serve, not a franchise, and we have cared for families since 2015.

  • Every caregiver passes a background check before entering a client’s home, and a fingerprint background check in Washington
  • Our Washington caregivers are HCA or CNA certified, with annual continuing education
  • Our Texas caregivers are screened against the state Employee Misconduct Registry and Nurse Aide Registry, and complete nine hours of continuing education each year
  • Caregivers are W-2 employees, never contractors, supported by a local office team
  • Licensed by the Washington State Department of Health (IHS.FS.60603640) and by Texas Health and Human Services (024759)
  • No minimum hours, no long-term contract, and our rates are published on every location page

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Can I meet the caregiver before I leave?

Yes. We want you comfortable before you go, and we will gladly arrange a meeting before care begins. Many families schedule the first respite visit while they are home.

  • What if my plans change while I'm away?

Call us. We schedule a cushion of time between clients for exactly this, so coming home early or staying later is usually easy to accommodate with as much notice as you can give.

  • If we pause after a respite stay, do we redo the paperwork later?

No. As long as care has not lapsed for more than six months, your assessment and care plan stay on file, and restarting is a phone call.

  • Can someone care for my mom while we're on vacation?

Absolutely. Trips, celebrations, and obligations are some of the most common reasons families call us. We can cover daily visits or around-the-clock care for the length of the trip.

  • Can respite care cover nights, weekends, or holidays?

Yes. We provide care 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, including overnights, weekends, and holidays. For extended coverage, see our 24-hour support page.
