Personal Care for Seniors
Personal care is respectful, hands-on help with bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, and mobility, provided in your loved one’s own home. Generations Home Care provides personal care for seniors in Spokane, Tacoma, and Bremerton, Washington, and McKinney, Texas, delivered with dignity by caregivers we would trust with our own parents.

What is personal care?
Personal care is hands-on help with the everyday tasks that get harder with age, what care professionals call the activities of daily living: bathing, dressing, grooming, using the bathroom, and moving safely around the home. It can be as light as a caregiver standing by in case of a fall, or as complete as full assistance with every step, and it always follows what your loved one still wants to do for themselves. The goal is never to take over, only to make the hard parts of the day safe and comfortable. Personal care is one part of our broader in-home senior care, and many families combine it with meals, errands, and companionship.

How do you protect my parent's dignity?
Nothing is more sensitive than personal hygiene, and asking for help with it is hard at any age. Many seniors quietly stop bathing rather than ask, then withdraw from friends and family out of embarrassment. We believe seniors deserve better.
Our caregivers are trained to guard privacy and dignity first: help is as hands-on or as hands-off as your loved one wants, preferences are written into the care plan, and the same respectful routine is followed every visit. During the assessment we ask about caregiver preferences, including gender, and match accordingly. Most of our female clients prefer a female caregiver for personal care, and the answer to that request is always yes.
Why does bathroom safety matter so much?
Bathroom injuries rise sharply with age, and more than a third of them happen while bathing or showering. Regular, supported bathing prevents more than falls: good hygiene reduces the risk of urinary tract infections, which are common in seniors and can become serious when missed.
Beyond hands-on help, we can point out what would make bathing safer at home. While we do not do the modifications ourselves, we can connect you with occupational therapists and contractors for grab bars, shower mats, and walk-in tubs.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can my mom choose a female caregiver for bathing help?
Yes, always. We ask about caregiver preferences, including gender, during the assessment and schedule caregivers who fit. Your loved one’s comfort comes first.
How much help can a caregiver provide?
Anything from monitoring and standby assistance, where the caregiver is simply there in case of a fall, to complete assistance with every part of bathing, dressing, grooming, and toileting. The care plan sets the level, and it can change as needs change. If needs grow to overnight or around-the-clock support, see our 24-hour care.
How often can a caregiver help with showering?
As often as your loved one needs, from weekly to daily or more. We generally recommend showering at least twice a week, with sensitive areas cleaned between showers.
My dad only needs help in the shower. Is there a minimum?
No. We can do a one-hour visit if a shower is all the help your dad needs. Shorter shifts bill at a higher hourly rate because we pay caregivers a premium for them.
Can you help someone with memory loss who resists bathing?
Yes. Our caregivers are experienced with the patience, routine, and gentle encouragement that bathing with dementia takes. See our dementia and Alzheimer’s care page for how we approach memory care at home.
