Team Member of the Month: Denise Mills

My name is Denise Mills. I am 48 years old with four adult children, one granddaughter, and  one step grandson. I have always wanted a job where I could make a difference in people’s lives. At first, I wanted to open a foster home for temporary placement, but my kids said “Mom wait till we leave the house!” So has not happened quite yet. My grandmother suffered from dementia and was very ill in 2011 and I took care of her at home until she passed. She is where I first encountered dementia. One day, she woke up in the middle of the night and told me “I’m ready to go home, can you help me pack?” I thought to myself, “Okay, she is home!” Is she talking about the “upper room”(heaven) when she says home? I was really nervous because I was not going with her. I told her if she needed to pack I would help her, but it would have to be in the morning. My response calmed her and she fell back asleep. The experience that I had with my grandmother is something that I will never forget.

In January of 2016, my boyfriend had a massive heart attack and was in ICU for a month and a half. When he was about to be released from the hospital, we had to start looking into care options. This was the beginning of my Home Health journey. After taking a state certified class and test, I became a Certified Nursing Assistant. I didn’t want to stop providing care when my boyfriend recovered, so I started caring for my disabled nephew. Some of my classmates worked for a home care agency and told me that they really enjoyed the environment. After graduating training, I came across Generations Home Care.

I have been working for Generations Home Care for about 6 months now and I enjoy my time with the staff and clients. I have met a lot of amazing elderly and non-elderly patients with incredible life stories and wonderful families. I love the relationship you build with the clients and their families. This is the best job decision I have made and I am glad to be working with this wonderful staff and company. Recently, my daughter became employed at Generations Home Care. We refer everyone seeking care to this company!
